We all have deep longings. I want to be happy! I want to make a success of my life! When we meet up with disappointments, we say: That can’t be all there is to it. I want more from life! God is behind these longings – that is our belief. Longing makes us look for people and friends who love us and whom we can love. It makes us look for God and ask where he is.
However, we can’t find God so easily. The Bible tells us that God lives in inaccessible light (1 Tim 6,16). Actually we cannot say anything about him, because he is greater than anything we can imagine.
Yet we can find his footprints in this world. We can discover his creative power in creation, in nature and in people. We get an idea of his love through the love and friendship of people. Like the people in the Bible, we can hope and trust that he is always with us on our way through life, and in the smaller and bigger events we encounter. Jesus Christ is the clearest sign that God is with us and accompanies us.
Through looking for God’s footprints we are invited to do what the words imply: to look for God’s footprints – and to answer the God of life.
Looking for God’s footprints is not a method,
but a way.
It is as though God is sending us an SMS through our experiences, nature, technology, people, the pictures we see, etc. We are called upon to send him an SMS reply.
